Yeah. £200M game so fine them 10%?Stick a zero on the end and you’ve got a deal.
This would be absolutely zero incentive whatsoever to stop cheatingfine them £20 million and distribute the money to all championship clubs.
I’m not on social media but everything I’ve read suggests that Southampton have handled this appallingly.I really hope they don't back down. Here's some responses to their snivelling club statement.
Here’s the social media reaction as the Southampton CEO Phil Parsons issues a statement hitting out at the ‘manifestly disproportionate’ punishment they face….
@glenn_coin: You sound like you were taking promotion for granted. The only thing you are guaranteed to lose is 4 points and Wembley gate receipts. You were willing to deny Boro a shot at the £200m prize by cheating. That’s the harsh reality you face.
@BurntKneeCap: You shouldn’t be in a position to win a game worth over £200 million after cheating. I hope that clears everything up.
@jamesdelve: The £200mil isn’t a fine. It wasn’t yours. You weren’t guaranteed it. The reason you can’t fight for it is all your own doing. Sit down and shut up.
@DanJGrey: You cheated your way to the playoff final, therefore you don’t deserve to be in it. It’s very simple, really.
@Sfc_Lanky: what we did was bad but look at other clubs who were more bad!!!!!!!! (summarised it for you)
@pierreuk: I don’t understand Southampton’s logic of ‘being denied the chance to win £200m’ – didn’t you do that to us and all other teams by spying throughout the season? Why should you deserve that opportunity?!
@Dann23MFC: What about the financial losses Middlesbrough would suffer due to you cheating to gain an advantage? What about the financial losses to Derby, Wrexham due to you cheating to your league position?
@Bob_2969: You’ve not lost the equivalent £200m, you still needed to win the game. You’ve lost the chance to possibly gain promotion the same way that your cheating may have robbed Wrexham a chance at promotion. Systematic cheating that you knew was against the rules
@Danielw26738836: No one has ever been caught cheating on the eve of the playoffs, it is a 200 million pound game your right, which makes the cheating all the worse! You should have sacked those involved by now, not if it’s not reversed! Sort yourselves out! And more importantly, have some respect
@Josh_Fulford98: Absolutely embarrassing. Just playing the victim now – 1 minor sentence acknowledging the fans. We have no right to be playing Saturday, it’s a mortifying time for our fan base
@andyboro92: Talk about deflection wow… I genuinely feel bad for your fans what a load of shite that statement is, not a word about how much time and money you’ve cost them just completely fucked them about
Convenient that they only owned up to games they didn't win too. I bet they did it every game after the first time the new manager came up with the wheeze.I’m not on social media but everything I’ve read suggests that Southampton have handled this appallingly.
Unless they’re willing to disclose exactly who at the club knew in December/January (think that was the 1st instance) they haven’t got a leg to stand on. And, if at that point anyone not on the football side knew what was going on they should have reported themselves to the EFL, accepted the 3point (or similar) deduction & fine.
Instead it carried on for 4/5 months!
There’ll be championship clubs across the country going through their CCTV as we speak I expect.Convenient that they only owned up to games they didn't win too. I bet they did it every game after the first time the new manager came up with the wheeze.
Southampton have tried to play the pity cardThat Southampton statement saying this is the biggest punishment ever handed out is pissing me off, as is the media's crap response. I thought immediately, didn't Swindon suffer a bigger punishment back in the 80's?
Quick Google and I was right. Swindon actually won the then Second Division Playoff Final to get to the top flight, but were found guilty of multiple dodgy payments to players and not only were they not promoted, they were relegated to the Third Division! It's a slap on the wrist in comparison to that (I'm aware it's a different offence, but so are the cases Southampton compared themselves to).
Yes, the actual punishment as it stands today is a 4 point deduction next season, and the loss of whatever receipts you get from a Wembley final. The rest is just conjecture.Hull would beat Southampton anyway.

I think they actually stayed in the second tier after their appeal, but doesn’t take away your point that it’s clearly a bigger punishment as they’d actually been promoted. That Southampton statement saying this is the biggest punishment ever handed out is pissing me off, as is the media's crap response.
