This may well have affected his number of appearances in the upper two dividions ?
Some posters I have read have a distorted view of what he achieved or at least could have achieved

They are suggesting that he is ( was ) mostly a lower league player and "incinerating" that it was due to his footballing limitations where as possibly his medical condition may have had an impact on not only his physical ability to play at well as how much of a risk he was to sign ?
Therefore clubs lower down the pyramid may have been more willing to take a chance on him?

Exactly.
It proves nothing either way.
So why some would have a dig and want to class him as a " largely lower league player" is strange?
However well or otherwise he is doing in management, his playing career is irrelevant.
I am sure many great players ( Bobby Charlton, Hoddle - sure there are many more ) were no grest shakes at management?
