I think that there was a guitarist called Barry Hammett played there with one of the bands. Sadly passed away earlier this year. He also played with Johnny Kidd and the Pirates for a short while.
 
Was Tony Wyn Jones the resident dj there ? .

Remember there being the main disco/dance hall and a smaller enclosed secondary area upstairs .

Sorry cannot put names to the Band , but do remember them , last pint in the Prince of Wales before entering The Rank , tie and tidy shoes essential or no entry , good times .

Reading this been trying to remember when did being smartly dressed to get into night club stop. I remember seeing the arguments at doors with bouncers refusing entry telling them not smart enough :lol:

If I remember Top Rank became Ritzs , then Jumping Jacks and so on .
It became less formal as Ritzs ,The Valbonne and Barons seemed to have a more relaxed attitude .

Tried Harpers , now Sin City , once , never took to the place .
 
Hi thanks all, It wasnt Barry as we knew him. We remembered the singer was Connie. I said was it something Francis but i must be honest it doesnt ring a bell.

Yes , forgot about that name , remember seeing The Stranglers and Sparks playing there , different events , probably late 70s/early 80s .

Will have to do some digging on line now .

I think Connie Peters was the singer with "Johnny Francis Set"

I think The Smiths played there in 1984-they did Cardiff Uni the night before.
 
I saw Wizzard supported by Medicine Head in the Rank around circa 72-73 I think.
 
This is really going back to my early gigs , March 11 th 1974 , Top Rank , Swansea

Argent supported by The John Verity Band . both bands still touring under various guises even now .
