I’ve recently been diagnosed with this and waiting to see a specialist. There’s no real cure just management / therapy. The worse part of the scale is 5 where you cannot eat or drink in the normal manner and you are tube fed. I’d say I’m at stage 1 with 2 being a bad day where I cannot swallow food correctly and it gets stuck in my throat. This has happened as soon as I came off the tail end of Covid a few weeks back. I ruptured a chest muscle just from coughing food up. It’s a really nasty thing especially for someone like me who loves their food. I’ve a list of what I can eat though and drinking is no problem but chicken and bread seem to be the worst possible things and I avoid.

Has anyone else experienced this or know of anyone who has?

Cheers mate. I’m mostly ok. Just have to be very careful / choosy what i eat.

So many things they don't understand , sounds like one of those , what is known about the human body has advanced a lot but it's still just scratching the surface , hope you can adjust ok to any problems it might cause

Difficult disease to live with-just have to live as best you can around it. When my wife was a community dietitian, dealing with dysphagia was a common part of her work.

My best to you Ebo

It is baffling what has caused it as I don't take drugs or smoke and I barely drink alcohol. They say 22% of people over 50 get it. Only flared up after getting Covid. I am eating better and managing to supplement what I eat with meal replacements instead of snacking (use complan) seems to be helping.

Ask your doctor for fortijuice and fortisip on prescription.
They are ready to drink bottles of high protein/energy/nutrients.

Thoughts are with you.

Thinking about it- ask your GP to be referred to the Community Dietetics team. They should be able to give the best advice on supplements and management (such as softer diets).

Well I saw the specialist yesterday and they took bloods and urine and it appears I have acute pancreatitis. Which explains the nausea and sickness as my pancreas is inflamed. The initial possible dysphagia diagnoses from my GP was not a million miles away as the symptoms of not being able to swallow / keep food down is similar.

They ruled out gall stones and cancer for now (the samples will give them an indication) as I have no fever, problems passing water and stools are clear. What I was getting was a dull ache in lower abdomen which would spread to my back. I drank ginger water to alleviate that which the specialist said was a smart thing to do as painkillers would probably make it worse.

I have lost nearly 5 stone since April due to not being able to eat much and relying on soft foods and meal replacement suppliments. I was touching 17.5 stone and now just over 13. i should be 13.5 for my heght.

So I am on a course of anti-inflammatories and have to eat small but often. No food later that 8pm just liquids and no alcohol (I am ok with that as rarely drink these days). If I get severe pain or symptoms persist then i will need to go back. Worst case scenario is that they whip my gall bladder out and sell it on the black market.

Ebo, I feel for you mate
Is it "Rocks" ginger you are drinking?
If so it does help I can tell you from bitter experience.
