Thought I'd make a new thread as this one could go on for sometime maybe? Looks like it's in the public domain now clubs are in for Downes, as I said in other thread club have known all summer so will deffo have replacements lined up.

Vital are saying Palace were definitely interested at one stage, and I think it will be them who end up getting him. Wasn't it those who came in for him at Ipswich? Bid got rejected which resulted in a fallout and him playing U23 football.

£8 million would probably do it… would hope we put a sizeable sell on clause in there. I think he could go to the very top.

But selling Downes and replacing with Allen and Kasumu allowing us keep Piroe and Obafemi is good business in my eyes.

£8m feels about right to me although we all wear rose tinted glasses and consider him to be worth double figure millions. I hope you're right about the sell on clause and that it's based on resale value and not profit on sale.

However I'm not sure that we can afford to just sell Downes and then do what you then describe. IMO that still leaves us at least £5m short for this seasons budget.

Yeah I agree with this, can't be just Downes who goes imo.

He's been that dog we badly needed in the midfield.
If he goes he has set the benchmark.
Far more aggressive than many of the so called "stars" we had even in the Prem days

Is there anything firmer than enquiries? Clubs tend to enquire about a clutch of players to test the water.

Obviously money talks, both for the club and the player. Imo he's not ready for the step up. Another proven season and clubs will come knocking on the door. Given that time he needs to lose the red most moments without losing controlled aggression in his game.

I’d be ok with keeping Grimes providing he stops taking set pieces. He’s terrible. And he shouldn’t be an automatic starter.

Grimes's record with direct free kicks makes for truly atrocious reading (I think he has scored a total of one in his six seasons with us? I could be wrong and would love to see actual stats for this).
He can put in a decent corner though rarely do they have any real whip or menace.

I don’t think he actually has scored a single free kick, which baffles me as to why he’s still taking them.

Surely that means it’s not a decent corner? He has to be one of the best first man finders in our history.

Hoping again this season that the captaincy is stripped from him. He has shown he can do some excellent stuff on the pitch when he’s not hiding but he should not be captain and inherently undroppable.
