I think he has done a fantastic job

I don't know but I would think A good computer, good soft wear and a lot of skill to interpret the different shades of a black and white photos in to Colour
 
Google 'How to colorize ..." Use the American spelling. Not that I've done it myself. Anyone with Photoshop may be able to help.
