Well, I'm sure no one ever voluntarily walked the plank, they always had swords in their backs. This 'resignation' is no different.

And he only resigned as leader of the party (I think, as he was his usual incoherent, nonsensical self). They need to get him out, and they need to get him out now. He is trying to buy time for God knows what.

Edit - he didn't resign at all. He just said he would, and he never lies or breaks a promise.
